Last week the PSU Bicycle Advocacy Collective gave a warm Portland-style welcome to about 25 new PSU students by taking them on a casual tour by bike that cruised from PSU to SE Portland and back.

Total turnout at this years event, Around Town By Bike, is a healthy doubling from last years Explore Portland bike tour.  Twenty-five people is quite a handful considering that the group needed to stay together during the two hour ride, but the five experienced ride leaders did a good job keeping things safe and comfortable.  The biggest issue was when the Hawthorne Bridge lifted for mid-day testing, resulting in a small bike traffic jam.

For many on the tour, this was a first introduction to riding on downtown streets, bike boulevards, and a first look at some of SE Portland's bike friendly destinations.

The ride started at the PSU Millar Library, traveled down the quiet Park Blocks streets, visited Ladds Circle and the Harrison/Lincoln Bike Boulevard and returned to Portland via the Ankeny St Bike Boulevard, the Steel Bidge, Waterfront Park, Jefferson St and the Broadway Cycle Track.

Along the way, stops included Chance of Rain Cafe (now closed, sadly), Belmont Stumptown Coffee, and Laurelhurst Park.   Other places either stopped at, passed by, or mentioned include Mt Tabor Park, Hathorne District, Belmont District, CityBikes, the Lloyd Center Mall, and the Eastside Esplanade.

After the ride a number of people mentioned how much they enjoyed the ride.  When asked if we'd do it again, the answer is 'definitely', but the real question is: should we wait another year for the next New Student Week or find an excuse to do another one sooner?
